Oss.gg made my hacktoberfest productive.
Yes, you read the title right. Oss.gg made my Hacktoberfest so exciting! I remember learning about this hackathon from a post by Oss.gg on X. At first, I thought, "Let's try this," but I wasn't active for three days. Then, as my X feed got flooded with Oss.gg posts, it made me eager to try it out.
Here's a bit about myself: I'm a rookie in development, to be honest, and my main skills are in DevOps. But oss.gg had my back. They created so many quests related to no-code, which got me super excited. I was incredibly productive in October, even more than I imagined. Gamifying open-source really hooked other members too. Every morning, I spent at least 4 hours doing side quests. In this process, I gained some great skills, like using no-code tools such as n8n for creating templates, making YouTube videos, and brushing up on my design skills.
I became jack of all trades
I made many contributions in October, both in code and no-code. During this time, I actively contributed to projects like Dub, Formbricks, Twenty, Unkey, and Hanko, using all these open-source apps. I also wrote detailed blogs about these apps.
I'm not joking when I say I made a lot of contributions in October. Below are my GitHub stats, showing that I made most of my contributions for the entire year in October.
Grinding continues
As I mentioned, I contributed every morning, and it was sometimes challenging, like learning about a new product I had never used before. However, the documentation for this OSS project was excellent, even for a newbie like me. I learned a lot and used what I learned in my projects. For example, I created a rate-limiting app using Unkey, added authentication with Hanko, and used Formbricks to create surveys and additional templates that are now live in the product. I'm proud of what I accomplished, not going to lie.
But still, my favorite part about this hackathon is that I got noticed by OpenBB, which really made my day. I might be new to coding, but I really like financial software. OpenBB was my favorite project; I created a risk-return trade-off project using the OpenBB terminal and discovered how powerful it is. I made another submission using the OpenBB package, ran fundamental analysis on multiple stocks, and completed my contribution. I was surprised to get a follow back on X by Official OpenBB. Below is the proof.
Conclusion
I truly appreciate the effort every project maintainer put into this hackathon, and I would like to thank Formbricks, Dub, OpenBB, Unkey, Hanko, and Twenty for organizing this amazing event for us. I had a great experience, even as a beginner developer. It's wonderful.
